Thailand beach side getaway town of Phuket is only seeing occupancy rates averaging 40-55% this month, and some locals are attributing this to a lowering of air capacity to the region. In recent times, One-Two-Go has dropped all services to the destination, while Nok Air reduced capacity to only two services a week.
Overseas travelers from Australia, the Middle East, India, Hong Kong, China, Korea and Japan are the ones taking out the majority of accommodation on the island, with Japan seeing a big jump due to the recent re-launch of Narita–Phuket services. Thai Airways and a Hong Kong carrier are expected to also announce additional capacity in days to come.
So far this Thai fiscal year, from the 1st of October, 2007, Phuket International Airport has seen 4.79 million travelers, up 600,000 from 2007 figures.
